House Democrats Are First Party Caucus in History of Congress In Which Most Members Are Women or Minorities

According to a statement released by her office, U.S. Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (D‑Manhattan & Queens) said recently that she is thrilled to serve in the most diverse party caucus in the most diverse Congress in history. I am particularly excited that so many women are joining our ranks."  Representative Maloney is a former Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Women’s Issues and the chief House sponsor of the Equal Rights Amendment that would enshrine the principle of equality between the sexes in the U.S. Constitution.

The statement also noted that "for the first time in our country’s history, the majority of members in the House Democratic Caucus are women or members of minority groups. Included in the ranks of House Democrats are 61 females; 40 African-Americans; 25 Members of Hispanic descent; 9 Asian-Americans; 6 LGBT Representatives; one Native American (Ben Lujan of New Mexico); a Muslim (Keith Ellison of Minnesota), and the first Hindu to serve in Congress (Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii)."

“I am proud to serve in a party caucus that truly looks like America. The House Democratic Caucus reflects our great nation in all its diversity, and truly embodies the meaning of the phrase, ‘the people’s house,’” said Congresswoman Maloney.
